The 27-year-old is glad that the film’s producers and director have presented her in a completely different, unheard of avatar. “We’ve moved away from the kind of image people have of me. Thank god for this diametrically different role,” adds the first-timer who plays a Moroccan sand artist Afreen, a love interest of sorts for the film’s hero. Mastering sand art, she states, wasn’t easy: “We had a Russian girl to teach me the basic aspects like throwing sand like a pro and playing with it. Otherwise, my on-screen personality is pretty much like who I really am.”
Reports had suggested that Candice was afraid to bare it all because of India’s modern-yet-conservative mindset. “That’s true. I was apprehensive because this is India. It’s got a mixed culture. But it’s not the west where lingerie and swimsuit shoots don’t raise eyebrows,” she explains, adding that she pre-empted that the Indian audience would not appreciate skin show. “I really respect and admire Indians for it. With Azaan, I hope to strike more of an emotional connect than a ‘physical’ connect or a skin show connect.”
